How I work
Clarity that moves you forward
First, we get the strategy right – what makes you different and why people should care. Then we make it work – turning that strategy into words your people can use and ideas your customers can feel.
It is not about frameworks and PowerPoints. It is about clarity that moves you forward.
Getting to a standout strategy
What it is
Brand strategy isn’t a workshop and a framework. It’s a process of discovery, synthesis and definition. This isn’t about sitting in a room inventing positioning – it’s about finding (and building on) what’s already there but hasn’t been clearly articulated.
How we do it
To find it, we listen. To your customers, to your people, to the way the business actually runs. The signals are usually already there. They just haven’t been pulled together into something a leadership team can act on.
In practice that means interviews with your key customers and staff – or a survey where scale demands it. A competitor audit and a benchmark review. A read of any market research you already have, and a commission for what’s missing. A workshop with the leadership team to surface what people inside the business know but haven’t put into words. Then synthesis.
The breakthrough
Then comes the moment the work is for. The position that is both true to who you are and meaningfully different in your market – the kind of insight that feels obvious once it has been named. This is a creative leap, not a deduction. There is no formula. There is a process that makes it more likely.
What it becomes
Four foundations orbit a unique brand idea at the centre – your North Star.
-
Your positioning
Who you’re for and what you value.
-
Your purpose
Why you exist and why people should care.
-
Your principles
What you believe and how you behave.
-
Your personality
How you show up.
These create your brand foundation. More importantly, we crystallise them into your unique brand idea – your North Star.
What it gives you
Alignment. The leadership team agrees on what the brand stands for. The marketing team has a brief that holds. The work stops drifting back to the same arguments every quarter.
The expression
What it is
Then we put the strategy to work. This is where strategy becomes language people can use and ideas customers can feel.
How we get there
I draft and craft finding the words and the ways to bring the brand to life in the real world.
What we are looking for
The phrases that wake people, so that you are heard. Language that feels true. The tone that sounds true to you – at your best.
What it becomes
Your brand story – the narrative that explains who you are and what you’re about. Your core messages – the essential things that need to be consistent everywhere. Your value propositions – what people actually get. Your key messages by audience – what matters most to customers, investors, employees. Then your brand voice – not word lists, but practical principles people can use when they are writing anything from an email to a web page.
What it gives you
Language your people actually use. Not a 50-page guideline that sits on a server. The lines that make it into emails, briefs, decks and websites – because they sound right.
Strategy into life
You already have a defined strategy, you need to make it happen.
Some clients come with brand strategy sorted – they have an internal brand team, they have worked with an agency, or their strategy is clear and working well.
If your positioning, purpose and principles are well-defined and agreed, we can start at expression. I begin by fully understanding the strategy you already have, then develop the messaging frameworks and voice that bring it to life.
Why this approach works
It’s about partnership, not presentation. This isn’t about disappearing for six weeks and coming back with slides. Nor is it another one-and-done morning’s workshop delivering a deck-load of platitudes. We work together – your insight into the business, my experience translating that into your clear and actionable brand platform.
Understanding, thinking and craft. You get the strategic clarity and the words that make it work. Not one or the other.
The quality test
Three tests. Simple enough that anyone in the business can use it. Actionable enough that decisions get made from it. Sustainable enough that it still holds three years from now.
- Simple
- Actionable
- Sustainable
…the ability to grasp complex subjects and translate them into simple, straightforward messages.
The brands that move forward are not the ones with the longest strategy documents. They are the ones whose people know what they stand for, how to talk about it, and why it matters.
